The Jaen variety is cultivated in Portuguese lands since the second half of the XIX century. It is a very common variety in the Dão region and it is said that it have been brought to the area through the pilgrims that steered Santiago de Compostela. Jaen, besides producing generously, is also a variety of precocious maturation. It is plenty sensitive to rottenness. The wines are characterized essentially by its intense color, low acidity and intense aromas of red fruits.
