Typical of the Beira region, namely of the area of Bairrada and Dão where they call it “Blurry of the Flies” thanks to the small brown stains in the ripe berries. It is also known as Maria Gomes and Fernão Pires, the Bical variety is of the most important of Bairrada.
The maturation is precocious and for that the berries conserve plenty of acidity. It is quite resistant to rottenness, but sensitive to fungus. This variety produces very aromatic, fresh wines and well structured. The variety is also very used in the production of sparkling wines.
