Wine Region - Colares

It is said that this region is the most peculiar in the World. With the most original vineyards, the toughest production and the weirdest taste. The sand soils originated its success for its resistance to Philoxera and are the bench mark of Colares. Not even 20ha of vineyards at close proximity (0,5-3 Km) from the Ocean.

Colares is located on the foothills of Sierra de Sintra only 30km from Lisbon. The region is divided in 2 sub-areas (Chão de Areia – Sand Floor and Chão Rijo – Hard floor).

The type of soil where the vineyards are planted splits the character of its wines.

The climate is mild with frequent fog in the areas most exposed to winds blowing from the sea. Within small distances, climatic variations can be profound. The Chão de Areia – Sand Floor vineyards are confined to an area of loose sand which covers the clay where the vines are planted. The sand can in some points reach 10m of depth.
